Tuesday Tales: From a Picture

One week to go before spring arrives. Are you ready? I certainly am! Later this week, I’ll be going out to enjoy St Patrick’s Day and some corned beef and cabbage. Yum! This week, we have a picture prompt and are limited to 300 words. I’m continuing with Sea Breeze. Here’s the picture I selected.

The rain was now a steady drizzle, obscuring my view. Where was Callum? What if he’d gone off and had left me here to fend for myself?

Headlights coming from the side of the house eased my fear that he’d run off with my underwear, but I still knew nothing about this man and had agreed to spend the night with him—well, at his house. I could just imagine what my mother would have to say about that, but considering she was partially to blame for the mess I was in … How would Carine feel about another woman in the house tonight?

The truck stopped beside me. I grabbed my purse and got out, locking the door as I shut it. I hurried around to the passenger door, slipping and sliding as Callum had warned, barely making it without falling. Opening the door, I grabbed the metal bar and hoisted myself into the seat, my wet dress making slithering along the seat difficult, my feet catching on the pile of newspapers on the floor. A gust of wind slammed the door shut just as the drizzle morphed into a deluge.

At the shocked look on my face, Callum chuckled. “I told you it was foreplay. Put on your seatbelt. We need to get home before it gets worse. The wind’s kicking up.”

“It’s going to get worse?” I gulped, my heart beating a staccato. Perhaps I hadn’t been wrong about the hurricane. My bad luck wasn’t improving.

“Yes.” His gaze found mine. Was there regret in it? “Things usually do before they get better. Not much that can be done about that now. We just need to hope everything will sort itself out.”

Great. The last thing I needed was for matters to get worse.

That’s it. Stay safe and don’t forget to check out the other Tuesday Tales

Hi! I live in Eastern Ontario. I'm married with three adult children and five wonderful grandchildren. I prefer warm weather, and sunshine but winter gives me time to write. If I’m listening to music, it will be something from the 1960s or 1970s. I enjoy action movies, romantic comedies, but I draw the line at slasher flicks and horror. I love science fiction and fantasy as well. I love to read; I immerse myself in the text and, as my husband says, the house could fall down around me, and I’d never notice. My preferences are as varied as there are genres, but nothing really beats a good romance, especially one that is filled with suspense. I love historical romance too, and have read quite a few of those. If I’m watching television, you can count on it being a suspense — I’m not a fan of reality TV, sit-coms, or game shows. Writing gives me the most pleasure. I love creating characters that become real and undergo all kinds of adventures. It never ceases to amaze me how each character can take on its own unique personality; sometimes, they grow very different from the way I pictured them! Inspiration comes from all around me; imagination has no bounds. If I can think it, imagine it, I can write it!

  1. I love the way you fooled me about the use of the word “foreplay.” Hah! You meant the storm! Very clever. I got a good chuckle out of that. And it was the perfect way to categorize the sprinkles she’d been subjected to at the beginning. Great scene. Loving this story. Also, great use of the picture.

  2. I love this part- so vivid and evocative:

“Opening the door, I grabbed the metal bar and hoisted myself into the seat, my wet dress making slithering along the seat difficult, my feet catching on the pile of newspapers on the floor. A gust of wind slammed the door shut just as the drizzle morphed into a deluge.”

  3. Great scene! And yes, it seems like there is more ‘worse’ to come before it gets better.
I always make corned beef and cabbage on St. Paddy’s Day. Always. Sometimes even buying a 2nd one while they’re on sale for later on in the year. This year – with every thing going on – I plumb forgot. Until that morning, but I was meeting my boss at work for an 8 hour day. Fortunately the deli down the street has corned beef sandwiches. That filled in nicely at the end of a long day.
