Welcome to my post for the IWSG’s monthly blog. I’m pleased to report that my hip surgery was successful, and that I am on the mend, pain-free, and walking without any aids. Spring has tried to bring warmer weather, but I’m hoping summer will do the trick.
This month’s question: June 4 question – What were some books that impacted you as a child or young adult?
I was a big fan of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys for as long as I can recall. I also read about the adventures of the Bobbsey twins, Annette, Donna Parker, and many others. Perhaps that’s why I inevitably add suspense of some sort to all my books regardless of the genre.
When I got older, I drifted toward historical romance and books about Ancient Rome, Greece, and Egypt, but there was always a dash of suspense in them ae well.
What about you? What kind of books made an impression on you?

Hi! I live in Eastern Ontario. I'm married with three adult children and five wonderful grandchildren.
I prefer warm weather, and sunshine but winter gives me time to write.
If I’m listening to music, it will be something from the 1960s or 1970s.
I enjoy action movies, romantic comedies, but I draw the line at slasher flicks and horror. I love science fiction and fantasy as well.
I love to read; I immerse myself in the text and, as my husband says, the house could fall down around me, and I’d never notice. My preferences are as varied as there are genres, but nothing really beats a good romance, especially one that is filled with suspense. I love historical romance too, and have read quite a few of those.
If I’m watching television, you can count on it being a suspense — I’m not a fan of reality TV, sit-coms, or game shows.
Writing gives me the most pleasure. I love creating characters that become real and undergo all kinds of adventures. It never ceases to amaze me how each character can take on its own unique personality; sometimes, they grow very different from the way I pictured them!
Inspiration comes from all around me; imagination has no bounds. If I can think it, imagine it, I can write it!

Yes! Although I thought the television series went off in the wrong direction, but hey, different strokes for different folks.

I saw no more than 5 minutes of the show. I don’t watch TV anymore.

The Dune Chronicles, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’s trilogy of five, Belgariad/Malloreon, the Enderverse (Ender’s Shadow especially), and Asimov’s Foundation cycle.
I better stop there.

I can’t think of any one that stands out, yet a flood of them come to mind. Different genres, different topics, different styles. I still read that way. A few that stand out, Island of the Dolphins, My Side of the Mountain, Hatchet, Little House on the Prairie series, Chronicles of Narnia, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys…..and the list goes on and on.

I could’ve gone on and on, too. When I was teaching, Island of the Dolphins, and Hatchet were on the curriculum.

I read a lot of series in Afrikaans growing up (Trompie, Saartjie, Soekie, Jasper, Maasdorp) mainly about children running wild and having adventures in the 50s. Then, as I learned to read English properly, I read the Harry Potter books and a lot of Barbara Cartland!
