Insecure Writer’s Support Group Blog March 2024

Welcome to the March IWSG Blog post. February was a rough month for me, but looking forward to better days.

March 6th question: Have you “played” with AI to write those nasty synopses, or do you refuse to go that route? How do you feel about AI’s impact on creative writing?

This is an incredibly touchy subject these days. The only AI that I have played with is Grammarly, and I find it frustrating since it doesn’t understand nuances and meaning. It also occasionally messes with my voice. When that happens, I dismiss the suggestion and don’t use it. Within a few minutes, I’ll quit the program. In fact, there are times when its suggested corrections are just plain wrong. I’m content with Microsoft Editor.

My cover artist now uses AI in her designs, and I’m okay with that, but at this point in time, I have no intention of using AI in my writing. There is too much as yet unknown about AI and creative writing. I’ll reserve judgment until all of the quirks have been worked out.

That’s it. Short and sweet this month.

Hi! I live in Eastern Ontario. I'm married with three adult children and five wonderful grandchildren. I prefer warm weather, and sunshine but winter gives me time to write. If I’m listening to music, it will be something from the 1960s or 1970s. I enjoy action movies, romantic comedies, but I draw the line at slasher flicks and horror. I love science fiction and fantasy as well. I love to read; I immerse myself in the text and, as my husband says, the house could fall down around me, and I’d never notice. My preferences are as varied as there are genres, but nothing really beats a good romance, especially one that is filled with suspense. I love historical romance too, and have read quite a few of those. If I’m watching television, you can count on it being a suspense — I’m not a fan of reality TV, sit-coms, or game shows. Writing gives me the most pleasure. I love creating characters that become real and undergo all kinds of adventures. It never ceases to amaze me how each character can take on its own unique personality; sometimes, they grow very different from the way I pictured them! Inspiration comes from all around me; imagination has no bounds. If I can think it, imagine it, I can write it!

    1. The problem I find with Grammarly is that it doesn’t always see nuances and often wants me to remove what it considers redundancies or change verb tenses. Those changes can seriously impact my writer’s voice. I’m not surprised you would need to edit ChatGpt. It’s AI. It doesn’t always understand. I think of it as someone for whom English is a second language.

  1. Hi, Suzanne. I see that you live in Eastern Ontario. I lived in Ontario several times when I was growing up. It’s a great province. I stay away from AI right now and probably in the future. I think that only I can write my stories. I hope that you have had fun on IWSG Day!

    1. I always enjoy the comments I get on my posts as well as the other views I read. If you lived in Ontatio, then you know where Ottawa is. I live south of there in Cornwall. Enjoy the rest of your month.

  2. Maybe we’re all waiting to see what happens next with AI. I played with ChatGPT a little a few months ago for outlining and plotting questions, but I found I prefer working with my own writing. Given the strengths AI has in self-learning, maybe I should go back just to see how much/or if AI has changed. It was pretty interesting to see how quickly ChatGPT could generate text, even if I didn’t want to use that text as my own. Either way, more AI will come our way! Hope your month goes well.
