A to Z Challenge Blog 2024 The Letter J

Hello again! Today, I’m going to talk about the different ways people can use blogs. I like to use mine not only to promote my writing and the work to others, but I use it as a platform to just gab about things that matter to me, not just with my writing but with life in general.

J is for Journaling. There is no right or wrong way to use a blog. Some people simply post interesting photographs. Others post recipes. Still more post instructions for art projects. Many authors use their blogs as platforms to showcase their writing, especially when they have a new book coming out. Still more use it as a soapbox where they can pour their hearts out about things that matter to them.

I use blog posts either here or on another platform to write about Christmas or another holiday, a blog hop with my current WIP, the changes COVID made to our lives, my travels, my father’s death in 2019, and most recently my mother’s in 2024. You can read that post here: https://authorsbillboard.com/2024/02/saying-goodbye-for-the-last-time/

Using a blog as a safe place to journal isn’t new. When I first started blogging, I would say most of my posts were a series of random thoughts. I find writing to be cleansing, and when I can’t put something in a book, I can journal it. Some journal entries can’t be shared, and they serve a purpose, too. When I click delete, I toss away the anger, the hurt, and the frustration. If you find yourself storing up negative emotions, consider writing them down. At times when I do that, I can see how utterly petty I’ve been. Whatever you discover, you can learn a lot about yourself through journaling.

Come back tomorrow to see what I have for you under the letter K.

Hi! I live in Eastern Ontario. I'm married with three adult children and five wonderful grandchildren. I prefer warm weather, and sunshine but winter gives me time to write. If I’m listening to music, it will be something from the 1960s or 1970s. I enjoy action movies, romantic comedies, but I draw the line at slasher flicks and horror. I love science fiction and fantasy as well. I love to read; I immerse myself in the text and, as my husband says, the house could fall down around me, and I’d never notice. My preferences are as varied as there are genres, but nothing really beats a good romance, especially one that is filled with suspense. I love historical romance too, and have read quite a few of those. If I’m watching television, you can count on it being a suspense — I’m not a fan of reality TV, sit-coms, or game shows. Writing gives me the most pleasure. I love creating characters that become real and undergo all kinds of adventures. It never ceases to amaze me how each character can take on its own unique personality; sometimes, they grow very different from the way I pictured them! Inspiration comes from all around me; imagination has no bounds. If I can think it, imagine it, I can write it!

  1. Yup, in the beginning, I think we all tended to use our blogs in this manner. As time went on, some of us settled on a theme and stuck to it, others continued, and that’s okay as it’s lovely to see snippets of someone else’s life. Herstory in the making.

  2. I started a blog on a trip around Australia which has somehow been lost in the mists of time. However it was the 2016 A to Z which got me started properly. I mostly restrict it to April but often use material written at other times of the year. My purpose is to explore a topic in greater depth by using the A to Z format. I have a box full of my husband’s letters written to his family while overseas (before I met him). I want to type them up and put them in some order with photos as they deal with sea travel and life in London and Europe in the 1960s. A bit of history recorded for posterity.

  3. I began my blog after joining the 52 Ancestors 52 Weeks challenge as I wanted a place to post them. That led to my main blog now of where I still post stories on ancestors, grandchildren, crafts and foods. Hopefully the grands will fully enjoy my stories more one day. The oldest ones read here and there posting comments back… telling me I’ve made them famous! Ha
