Tuesday Tales: From the Word DECENT

The last week of October has snuck up on us. Here’s wishing you all a safe and happy Halloween the coming weekend. Today, the Tuesday Tales authors are writing to the prompt DECENT. I’m continuing with The Bonds of Time.

With no other choice left to her, Sam thanked Howard for his help and walked over to the car. Bags filled with groceries and sundry items covered the front seat, so she opened the back door and settled herself onto the tobacco-scented, worn leather seat while the driver finished putting her bags in the trunk, or boot as they called it here.

I should be fine … assuming this antique makes it to Dolmens and Keltoi.

The car’s interior was roomier than she’d expected, and she settled into the decent-sized seat that could easily accommodate four people instead of the three her sedan did back home. She fastened her seatbelt.

“Your car is well-maintained,” she started, unable to stop her concerns about its age.

“Aye. My father bought it the year I was born, 1970, and always pampered it. Mind you, it has its share of spare parts, you might say, but Conniker at the garage keeps it humming. We don’t get many visitors this late in the year.” Colin got in behind the steering wheel. “Most come in the summer, and even then, they tend to stay in Salisbury or here in Swindon.”

He removed his cap, showing off a generous bald spot, and then started the engine. They drove in silence for several minutes before he spoke again, describing the scenery they passed.

Sam looked out the window as the car sped through the section called “Old Town” admiring the beauty and uniqueness of the old stone and ivy-covered buildings.

“Is this your first visit to Wiltshire?”

“Not only Wiltshire, but England,” Sam answered, not surprised by the question. “I’ve waited a long time to come here.”

“I fancy myself a bit of a man of the world, but I can’t quite place your accent.” He turned off the main highway onto a country road.

“I’m from Canada, but I spent my younger years traveling with my parents. They were archeologists, and so am I.”

“Canadian? I have a cousin married to a Canadian, but she sounds different than you do. A veritable mish-mash of accents that place! So, you’re an archeologist? Like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft? The missus and I watch a lot of American films.” He straightened the mirror so that he could see her in the back seat, and in doing so, allowed Sam to see his eyes as well. “You seem a bit young to be spending your time poking around ruins looking for the dead and their leavings. Have you come to study our ruins? You’re not the first, but like I said, most come during the finer weather. Winter will be early this year, and the winds out on the Downs can chill you to the bone.”

Hi! I live in Eastern Ontario. I'm married with three adult children and five wonderful grandchildren. I prefer warm weather, and sunshine but winter gives me time to write. If I’m listening to music, it will be something from the 1960s or 1970s. I enjoy action movies, romantic comedies, but I draw the line at slasher flicks and horror. I love science fiction and fantasy as well. I love to read; I immerse myself in the text and, as my husband says, the house could fall down around me, and I’d never notice. My preferences are as varied as there are genres, but nothing really beats a good romance, especially one that is filled with suspense. I love historical romance too, and have read quite a few of those. If I’m watching television, you can count on it being a suspense — I’m not a fan of reality TV, sit-coms, or game shows. Writing gives me the most pleasure. I love creating characters that become real and undergo all kinds of adventures. It never ceases to amaze me how each character can take on its own unique personality; sometimes, they grow very different from the way I pictured them! Inspiration comes from all around me; imagination has no bounds. If I can think it, imagine it, I can write it!
